Every day, we use many different products on our bodies. However, you might not have realized that at the same time, you are exposing yourself to many different chemicals. These chemicals, although they might make you smell nice and make the textures a little more appealing, can actually be really harmful to your body.
When you put lotion on, have you ever noticed how it absorbs into your skin? Of course you have. But have you ever thought about the fact that those chemicals are going into your body? That’s a scary thought when you look at ingredient labels and realize that there’s multiple who-knows-what ingredients in every single product you use.
Luckily, there are people out there who have realized that this is a problem with our personal care products, and they’ve aspired to change the industry for the better by creating natural products that work just as well as regular ones, but with better, safer ingredients.
It’s taken me a while to finally find natural alternatives to all of the personal care products that I use on a regular basis. It’s not that there aren’t very many products out there; the real problem is that there aren’t many products that are worth the price and work as well or better than conventional products.
After a few years of trying, testing, and discovering, I’m giving you this list of my favorite alternatives.
Important note: If a product or brand made its way onto this list, that doesn't mean that all of the ingredients are guaranteed to not have harmful effects or that every product from that brand has all-natural ingredient lists.
Hand and Body Soap
Alternatives: Alaffia & Puracy
When it comes to finding a natural hand and body wash, there’s actually quite a few good options out there. One of my favorites is Alaffia. Not only does this company give to causes like building schools and donating bikes, they also make a great mild soap to use on your hands or body.
I’ve tried the coffeeberry and lavender scents, and my favorite is the lavender because it’s very calming, but they both work well.
Alternative alternative: Castile Soap
I’ve gotten Dr. Jacob’s Naturals in the past and it’s worked really well for me. From experience I can tell you that the peppermint and orange ones both smell really good.
Wellnesse returns once again. Wellnesse toothpaste is one of the best natural toothpastes I’ve tried - it looks great, it tastes great, and the ingredients are great.
Dr. Bronner’s toothpaste is also a great option, with flavors like cinnamon, peppermint, spearmint, and more. It tastes really good and has a nice “toothpasty” texture.
Earthpaste is just about the same as it sounds - earthy. It has clay and essential oil for a mild-tasting but effective toothpaste.
Uncle Harry’s is another one with clay and essential oils - this one has a really strong essential oil feel, which I like because it feels like it’s working.
Shea Moisture coconut lotion has a great texture and mild scent.
This one is great for eczema - I used to have really bad eczema and this lotion was one of the factors that helped me heal it. I’ve found from my experience that it works almost as well as steroid cream, which is huge for people with eczema because eczema can be really irritating.
Shea Moisture acne bar
I like this soap because it’s not very harsh, it’s natural, and it’s made specifically for acne. It also smells really good.
Fatco Cleansing Oil
Especially if you have dry skin (like me), this is a really great option for cleansing your skin - no soap at all! You just apply the oil to your skin and then remove it with a warm, wet washcloth.
Alba Botanica - A great alternative to conventional chapsticks. I’ve tried some of the summery scents and I really like them.
Whole Foods - I’ve tried the gingerbread kind from Whole Foods. Bonus: they taste good (not that I’d recommend eating them - even though they’re natural, they’re still not food :).
Wow, Wellnesse is killing it today. I love this brand and the blogger behind it. Their dry shampoo has options for both darker and lighter hair.
Fatco - I really like Fatco deodorant for the simple fact that it really works (a necessity for natural deodorant). When making the switch to natural deodorant, it’s hard not to wish you had that aluminum stuff to keep you from sweating, but Fatco can help you with this process because it’ll keep you smelling fresh.
Pretty Frank - Another brand that I like just as much as Fatco is Pretty Frank, another aluminum-free deodorant that, in my experience, works well.
I hope this gave you a few ideas if you've been looking for natural alternatives to your conventional personal care products.
Shampoo and COnditioner
Shampoo and conditioner have been the hardest area for me. There are lots of different alternative options out there, but unfortunately I’ve found that some of them don’t work as well as conventional products, and I eventually get fed up with my hair feeling nasty and go back to the chemical-laden products I was using before.
There’s a blogger who I am a huge fan of, Katie Wells from wellnessmama.com. She writes about a lot of health and wellness topics, one of which is personal care products. She has been writing about natural products that you can make at home on her blog for a while (there’s some really great recipes that you should check out), and a few months ago I tried her new line of personal care products, Wellnesse.
There are quite a few things I love about Wellnesse. First of all, I totally trust that there are only natural ingredients in the products. Second, they’re my favorite blogger’s line. Third, the packaging is so cute. And last but certainly not least, they really, actually work better than conventional products.
Although I haven’t tried the shampoo and conditioner for curly hair, I’ve tried the regular ones and I’ve noticed an incredible improvement in the manageability and shininess of my hair. I never want to go back to using conventional products after using Wellnesse shampoo and conditioner.
Personal care products can be laden with chemicals that you don't want to be putting on your skin. That's why finding safer alternatives is so important.
I know that it can seem overwhelming at first, but hopefully this list has given you a start to finding more safer alternatives to conventional personal care products.
