I started the Paleo diet about three and a healf years ago… I’ll admit that I don’t follow every “rule:” I occasionally have legumes and gluten-free grains, and 85% dark chocolate is a daily must. The thing about the Paleo diet is that it rules out options like Goldfish, Veggie Sticks, crackers, fruit snacks, pretzels, and all of those other carby snacks that we all know and love. Over time, I’ve come to not mind that aspect of Paleo, and I don’t even miss taking Pirate’s Booty to school for snack anymore.
Part of learning to get rid of those unhealthy, processed snacks is figuring out real, whole-rood recipes that taste just as good and are also quick and easy to make and take to school with me. If you also strive to be healthy and need some quick and easy options to take with you on-the-go, try these snacks - maybe you’ll like them.
1. Banana with sunflower seed butter.
Banana’s are my absolute favorite fruit, no doubt about it. And yes, I like them with the brown spots. I don’t have nuts in my house, so I use sunflower seed butter, but any nut butter will work. Just have two tablespoons with half a banana or and apple. You can also add coconut flakes on top, which I sometimes do.
2. RX Bars.
These bars are yummy and proteiny. I’m big on lifting weights, so these protein bars, made with nuts, dates, and egg white, are some of my favorite snacks. They have clean ingredients and
My favorite kinds are the chocolate flavors, like chocolate sea salt.
3. Dark Chocolate
I’m pretty sure I couldn’t live without dark chocolate. Although it’s not technially “Paleo” because of the cane sugar, I’m not very dogmatic about my diet and am willing to stretch the “rules” (I don’t even like using that word to talk about my diet). I eat 85% dark chocolate from the brand Green and Black’s, although sometimes I opt for Theo’s 70% Sea Salt Almond, both of which are SO GOOD. Dark chocolate is really easy because all you have to do it take it out of the bar, which is one thing that I really like about it. Besides the cane sugar, these two dark chocolates are Paleo friendly, and as an added bonus they are both organic.
4. Turkey, olive, blueberry, and avocado kabobs
I like to take a little deli turkey, a blueberry, an olive, and a small slice of avocado, and stick them all on a toothpick. It may seem like an odd combination, but they taste great together! Omit one of the ingredients if you’re not a fan, it’s pretty forgiving as long as you use the right flavor combinations.
5. Raw veggies with guacamole
When you can’t eat chips, you’ve gotta get creative! Raw veggies still have the crunch of chips, and they taste great with guacamole. You could also use a different healthy dip for your veggies.
I don’t eat dairy, so I use coconut yogurt, but feel free to use any kind of yogurt! Add vanilla, maple syrup, honey, berries, or fresh fruit. I even like to have cinnamon and nutmeg with bananas on my yogurt. I also add collagen peptides to mine.
7. Leftover meatballs
Okay, I think this one’s actually just me, but I like to eat leftover meatballs when I’m hungry. What… it’s high in protein!
8. Hemp Protein Powder Balls
I’ve been lifting weights for a few years now, and I’m all about the PROTEIN. I posted this recipe for my Hemp Protein Powder Balls a little while ago. I was trying to figure out a way to use hemp protein powder, and this recipe was what came of it! Don't let their infamously unappealing looks make you shy away from trying them.. they taste much better than you'd think.
9. DIY trail mix
Trail mix can have some pretty nasty ingredients in it if you buy it from the store (specifically unhealthy vegetable oils like canola oil), so you can make your own! Mix however much you want of these trail mix ingredients, but don’t feel like you have to use all of them, and feel free to come up with your own ideas, too!
10. Bone broth
I drink cold bone broth sometimes (although you’re perfectly welcome to heat yours up if you so desire). I like these little ones from Pacific Foods. We hear about the health benefits of bone broth all the time, and a great way to sneak it in is at snack time.
Snacking doesn’t have to be unhealthy! With these ten snacking options, you can snack guilt-free anytime of day. You won’t even miss your Goldfish.
