5 Important Reasons Why Stepping OUt of Your Comfort zone is important
This is a topic that I’ve been really into lately.
I think that stepping out of your comfort zone is an incredibly important life skill, because when you step out of your comfort zone, growth can happen, and you start to push yourself outside of what you used to be able to do and into a whole new world of possibilities.
Today I want to talk to you about the way that pushing yourself out of your comfort zone affects your life, because it has a dramatic impact. I think that too many people play it safe too often in their lives and in the wrong ways, and it leads to playing small with your life and not making the impact that you ultimately have the ability to make.
Honestly, one thing that brought this up is something that happened to me over the summer, which was my parents forcing me to join weight lifting at my new school.
At first, I was strongly opposed to it. I felt awkward and uncomfortable and nervous. But eventually, some of the people who I went to weight lifting with became good friends. It's crazy how stepping out of my comfort zone (even when I really, really didn't want to) had such a dramatic effect on my life. Thanks to that weight lifting class, I came to the first day of volleyball practice and the first day of school feeling like I was already comfortable at the school.
Another thing that I wanted to talk to you about is my blog, which I took a risk in starting, and I also took a risk in sharing publicly, but I'm so glad that I did those things because now I have a blog that gets views and impacts real people, and that's just amazing to me.
That's just a little bit about how and stepping out of my comfort zone has impacted me. I want to talk about how taking risks can impact your life and different areas of your life that can grow from doing this.
1. It helps you care less about what other people think
This is an area that is super duper tough for me. I definitely struggle with this. But the more that you care what people think and are afraid of it, but then decide to step through it and do what you are scared to do anyway, the more you will begin to realize that you are more resilient to other people's opinions than you thought you were.
Not letting what people think stop you can really help you in life. I'm not saying that you need to never take people's opinions into consideration, I’m saying that there are certain areas where we definitely tend to allow caring what other people think to stop us. So I want you to step through that, and I want you to stop being a prisoner to what people think.
2. You discover hidden talents
Volleyball has had such a big impact on my life. I have spent so many hours-- countless hours-- just practicing volleyball. If I hadn't taken a risk and just tried it in 5th grade, taking the risk that maybe I'd be bad at it and that I wouldn't enjoy it, then I never would have figured out that I have a sport that I love.
Just the thought of that is crazy to me, and I'm really, really glad that I decided to try it. This can relate to your life when you decide to try a new hobby or activity and maybe a sport-- you’re discovering potential that you have to be good at it.
If you never try, you'll never know, so why not go for it?
3. You meet amazing People
I mentioned volleyball earlier. Volleyball is incredibly important to me as a sport that I love, but it has also impacted me through the people that I have met.
I have some really close friends now that I have made through volleyball, and I never would have gotten to meet them if it wasn’t for volleyball.
Similarly, trying things, whether it’s a sport or a club, can lead you to some pretty amazing people.
4. It creates opportunities
By taking risks, you are learning more about yourself and your capabilities. You are meeting new people and learning and discovering new things.
All of these things can help you to find opportunities. If you try to always stay within your comfort zone, you’ll never know what great opportunities lie just outside of it.
5. It gives you unique life experiences
In your life, you will have many experiences. However, the nature of those experiences depends on the lengths you go to get them. Some amazing life experiences will require stepping outside of your comfort zone.
Think about important life experiences that you’ve been through that have really impacted you-- I bet there was some level of risk involved.
For example, publishing my blog was an incredibly impactful experience for me. All of the hard work I had put into the design of my blog was finally going public. However, I was risking a lot. I was risking what other people would think. I was risking the possibility that maybe I wouldn’t be able to keep up with posting weekly. I was risking people not liking my posts. But I did it anyway, and I’m glad that I did.
Stepping outside of your comfort zone is important for making progress. Sometimes, the experience of doing something that you're scared to do is just what you need in order to have the confidence to do it again and again and again.
There are so many benefits that can come from stepping outside your comfort zone-- you can:
